Regenerative Renaissance for the Serra de Tramuntana

Regenerative Renaissance is a transformative three-year project aimed at addressing critical conservation challenges in the Serra de Tramuntana to catalyze the regeneration of the Balearic Islands’ agricultural and forestry sectors.

Triggered by issues such as estate abandonment and the decline of traditional forestry due to management challenges and low profitability, the Tramuntana’s landscape faces severe degradation, rising climate risks, and a significant loss of cultural heritage. This initiative, built on over a decade of work by FIM and Tramuntana XXI, seeks to reconnect the local community with its cultural and natural heritage, driving economic, cultural, and ecological regeneration.

The Challenge

The Serra de Tramuntana faces pressing challenges, including land abandonment, ecological degradation, and increased climate risks. These challenges threaten traditional agricultural practices and the natural balance, necessitating innovative, sustainable solutions to regenerate both the landscape and its rich cultural heritage.

The Solution

Regenerative Renaissance is developing a regenerative model specifically adapted for the  Serra de Tramuntana. This model is built on three foundational pillars: establishing infrastructure to revive traditional primary sector activities, transitioning to circular and regenerative management practices, and modernizing operations with innovative financing methods, such as environmental credits. In the initial phase, the project will focus on four pilot estates that represent key land uses, including traditional agriculture and forestry. These estates will serve as demonstration sites for regenerative practices, establishing a foundation for an ecosystem credit system that generates revenue from positive environmental impacts, such as biodiversity enhancement, water retention, carbon sequestration, and risk prevention.

Developed in partnership with the Balearic Government, this credit model aims to offer a more holistic alternative to traditional carbon credits. To foster knowledge-sharing, an educational program—including workshops and consulting services—will support community engagement. Additionally, shared infrastructure, such as an organic oil press in Sóller and specialized forestry equipment, will strengthen sustainable operations. As the project progresses, phase two will extend regenerative practices to additional estates across the region, refining and adapting the model as needed. The final phase will focus on consolidating these models and expanding their application throughout the Balearic Islands.

Key Initiatives

  • Pilot Estates: Implement the regenerative model on four pilot estates, each representing core land uses in the Serra, and provide resources and support for adopting regenerative practices.
  • Infrastructure Development: Establish critical shared infrastructure, such as a state-of-the-art organic oil press and forestry equipment, to enhance local agricultural and forestry productivity sustainably.
  • Education Program: Offer workshops, educational materials, and hands-on consulting services to promote knowledge transfer and skill-building.
  • Environmental Credits: Develop a platform and methodology for environmental credits that reward regenerative practices, enhancing biodiversity, hydrological function, carbon storage, risk mitigation, and sociocultural preservation.
  • Expansion Plans: Gradually extend the regenerative model across the Serra de Tramuntana and other areas of the Balearic Islands, incorporating a wider variety of crops and adaptive management practices.
Impact
  • Land and Ecological Restoration: Reverse land abandonment and environmental degradation in the Serra through regenerative practices and collaborative efforts.
  • Economic and Cultural Revitalization: Strengthen the agroforestry sector, providing new income opportunities for farmers and landowners while preserving traditional cultural heritage.
  • Community and Resilience Building: Foster community involvement, build a circular regional economy, and enhance resilience, creating a pioneering model for other Mediterranean regions.

Key Partners

  • Tramuntana XXI: Project leader with extensive experience in regional planning and sustainable development.
  • True World: Partner for environmental monitoring and public engagement.
  • Azolla: Developer of the ecosystem credit model for regenerative practices.
  • APAEMA: Leader in regenerative agriculture on the island.

Future Outlook

Regenerative Renaissance is structured as a four-year project with plans for ongoing expansion. Phase one will focus on the pilot estates within the Serra de Tramuntana, with a second phase to extend regenerative practices across the region, and a third phase to expand the model throughout the Balearic Islands.
