Marine environmental education

The Environmental Education Activities Program aboard an electric boat aims to carry out marine conservation and environmental awareness activities aboard the traditional Mallorcan boat "Juana Mari." The project includes the restoration of the boat, its modernization with the installation of an electric motor, and the organization of educational activities related to the conservation of the marine environment and the maritime culture of the Balearic Islands.

The Challenge

The project responds to the need to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the marine environment and the cultural heritage of the Balearic Islands. It also addresses the decline in the professional use of the "llaut," a traditional boat from the region, and promotes sustainable navigation by installing an electric motor to reduce environmental impact.

The Solution

Restoring the "Juana Mari" boat and electrifying it is the starting point for conducting environmental education and marine protection activities. These activities include coastal clean-up programs, environmental monitoring, patrols to protect seagrass meadows (Posidonia), and educational initiatives on traditional maritime culture. The Mediterranean Initiatives Foundation will coordinate these activities in collaboration with ecological, scientific, and social entities.

Key Initiatives

  • Trash Collection: The boat will be equipped with nets to collect floating waste, contributing to cleaning the coastline.
  • Localized Clean-Up Programs: In areas specifically affected by pollution, clean-up programs will be organized with volunteers.
  • Environmental Monitoring: The boat can participate in marine environmental monitoring projects using sensors to measure water quality and other environmental parameters, contributing to scientific research and early detection of environmental issues.
  • Posidonia Patrols: Patrols will be conducted to detect and prevent activities negatively impacting Posidonia meadows, combined with awareness-raising about the ecological richness of the Balearic Sea.
  • Education on Maritime Culture: Educational trips will be organized to explain the history and importance of the "llaut," as well as to raise awareness of sustainable navigation.

Impact
  • Marine Environment Protection: It will contribute to cleaning the coastline and environmental monitoring, improving the health of the marine environment around the Serra de Tramuntana.
  • Cultural Heritage Dissemination: Through educational outings, the project will promote knowledge about the traditional maritime culture of the Balearic Islands.
  • Awareness of Sustainable Navigation: Thanks to the boat’s electric motor, sustainable navigation will be promoted, reducing the environmental impact of activities on board.

Key Partners

  • Mediterranean Initiatives Foundation: Project coordinator.
  • True World: Potential collaboration in the "Love the Mediterranean" project to expand the boat's use in sustainable navigation activities.
  • Fundació Guillem Cifre de Colonya: Entity that supports the initiative.
  • Future Partners: Ecological, scientific, and social organizations that will participate in the activities.

Future Outlook

The project plans to expand educational and marine protection activities and establish new collaborations with local and international entities to continue promoting sustainable navigation and marine conservation.
