Monitoring

MA-10 Monitoring Platform

The MA-10 Monitoring Platform was developed in response to the growing environmental and acoustic disturbances along the MA-10 road, which cuts through the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana—a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. This region, known for its immense natural and cultural value, faces increasing pressure from human activities and the effects of the climate crisis. One of the most pressing issues is the illegal racing and general overcrowding on the MA-10 road, which not only disrupts the natural environment but also significantly diminishes the quality of life for residents. To address these challenges, Tramuntana XXI, in collaboration with our technology partner True World, has initiated a comprehensive monitoring system designed to track and mitigate these impacts.

The Challenge

The MA-10 road has become a significant source of environmental and acoustic pollution, particularly due to illegal racing activities that disturb both the natural surroundings and the daily lives of Serra de Tramuntana residents. The current surveillance systems are ineffective, and enforcement measures are often inadequate, making it difficult to mitigate these harmful effects.

This ongoing pollution not only degrades the region's ecological balance but also undermines the well-being of those living near the road.

The Solution

In partnership with True World, Tramuntana XXI is implementing an advanced monitoring platform for the MA-10. This system will track multiple environmental variables, including acoustic pollution, air quality, and meteorological data. The project involves deploying a network of sensors along the MA-10, supplemented by georeferenced satellite data, to capture and visualize information in real-time.

This data will be made publicly accessible through an online platform, allowing both residents and authorities to monitor and address the road’s environmental impact effectively.

Additionally, traffic density will be analyzed, distinguishing between different vehicle types to provide a detailed assessment of the road's impact on the environment.

Key Initiatives

  • Sensor Network Deployment: Installation of a network of sensors to monitor acoustic pollution and air quality along the MA-10.
  • Satellite Data Integration: Incorporation of georeferenced satellite data to enhance the information gathered by the sensors.
  • Public Viewing Platform: Creation of a real-time visualization platform accessible to residents, authorities, and other stakeholders interested in the environmental status of the Serra de Tramuntana.
  • Traffic Analysis: Differentiation of traffic density by vehicle type to provide a precise evaluation of the environmental impact.
Impact
  • Improved Quality of Life: By reducing environmental and acoustic pollution, the project aims to enhance the quality of life for residents of the Serra de Tramuntana.
  • Increased Transparency: The platform will offer real-time access to environmental data, empowering the community and local authorities with the information needed to make informed decisions.
  • Sustainable Management: The availability of objective, real-time data supports better decision-making for sustainable territorial management and policy development.

Key Partners

  • Tramuntana XXI: The coordinating entity of the MA-10 Monitoring Platform project.
  • True World: The technology partner providing the necessary infrastructure and technical support for data monitoring and visualization.
  • Plataforma Indignats Ma-10: Citizen entity that brings together residents affected by noise and hazards on the Ma-10 road.

Future Outlook

The MA-10 Monitoring Platform is envisioned as a long-term tool with the potential for expansion to include new monitoring variables and enhance the accuracy of collected data. The ultimate goal is to establish continuous and effective surveillance that contributes to the preservation of the Serra de Tramuntana and controls the negative impacts associated with the misuse of the MA-10 road.
