Forest Dynamization

Ecoregion in Tramuntana

In 2020, the Tramuntana Ecoregion project was launched as a pioneering initiative driven by Tramuntana XXI and the Spanish Society of Organic Agriculture (SEAE). This project aims to transform the Serra de Tramuntana from a static postcard into a thriving, dynamic landscape by reconnecting residents with their land. The project encourages farmers, citizens, businesses, associations, and local administrations to collaborate on strategies for local product commercialization and sustainable land management.

The initiative began with a series of participatory meetings involving key stakeholders and civil society representatives from seven municipalities within the area under the Tramuntana Consortium. These discussions identified critical needs related to the management of forest and agricultural estates and led to the creation of a comprehensive action plan to address them. Over the past two years, more than 350 interviews have been conducted with forestry and agro-food sector representatives, resulting in the development of guides and catalogs to promote local products and services. The project has also launched a public awareness campaign to highlight the importance of local products and sustainable forest management.

As the project enters its third year, it aims to expand its successful methodology to the Pla de Mallorca, broadening its impact across the region.

The Challenge

The Serra de Tramuntana is facing an increasing disconnect between its inhabitants and the land, exacerbating the challenges of traditional agricultural and forestry management. This detachment has turned a once vibrant landscape into a seemingly static postcard, threatening the region's cultural and ecological wealth. The abandonment of agricultural estates due to management difficulties and lack of profitability, coupled with the looming threats of climate change, has made it essential to establish a governance system that helps to regenerate the land ensuring both food sovereignty and sustainable resource management.

The Solution

The Tramuntana Ecoregion project was built on a foundation of extensive stakeholder engagement, where participatory meetings across the Serra de Tramuntana identified the shared needs of the community. These discussions led to the development of a targeted action plan focused on revitalizing local agricultural and forestry practices.

To address the challenges of land management and product commercialization, the project conducted over 350 interviews with key representatives from the forestry and agro-food sectors. These efforts culminated in the creation of detailed guides and catalogs that provide visibility to local products and services, alongside the development of a web viewer that allows consumers to easily locate local producers and businesses offering local products.

The project also emphasized capacity building, offering targeted training sessions led by experts on topics such as financing, sustainable forest management, and transitioning to regenerative agricultural practices.
